Statement on Russia
Russia has a total land area of 6.5 million square miles about 1.8 times the size of the US . Its population of 144 million is a little less than half that of the US . There are at least 100 different recognized ethnic groups in Russia . Each group has its own customs, language or dialect and religious beliefs (including idolatry). Russians are the largest group; some of the others are Ukrainian, Tatars, Komi, Armenians, Hunts, many to the North and many in the Caucasus's.
Protestants represent only 1% of the population. The largest of the Christian churches being the Russian Orthodox . Only around 64% of the population consider themselves to be affiliated with any organized faith and fewer than 4% attend services.
The Russian Federation adopted a 1997 law making it more difficult for outside religions to be recognized and more privileges to the Russian Orthodox Church which continues to have the closest relationship with the government. Russian Missions is affiliated with the Russian Baptist Convention and has legal status (or perhaps tolerance) in the country.
